After the devastating Bhote Koshi flood on August 26 left 41-year-old Bishnu Kumari Dangol with nothing, a glimmer of hope emerged from the medical community. Having lost her home and possessions to the raging waters, the Sindupalchowk resident faced another life-threatening challenge: kidney failure. In a remarkable act of medical excellence and compassion, Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) stepped forward to perform a life-saving kidney transplant entirely free of charge.

The procedure was made possible through a selfless act of devotion from her husband, Rajkumar Dangol, who donated one of his kidneys to save his wife. The surgical team at KMC successfully completed the complex operation, ensuring that the financial burden did not add to the family’s existing trauma from the natural disaster. This initiative by the hospital provided a critical safety net for a family already struggling to recover from total displacement.

Following a successful recovery period under the close supervision of KMC’s specialists, Bishnu Kumari has been officially discharged from the hospital in good health. Now fully recovered, she and her husband are preparing to move forward and rebuild their lives. This successful transplant serves as a powerful testament to human resilience and the vital role of humanitarian medical care in times of extreme hardship.
