The Korala border crossing between Nepal and China has seen a significant influx of livestock as sheep and mountain goats, locally known as Chyangra, have started arriving from Tibet. According to the quarantine checkpost located in Nhechung, Lomanthang-4, four distinct herds have already crossed into Nepali territory. This movement marks a steady flow of trade through the northern corridor, which has become a vital route for sourcing these high-altitude animals.

Since the Korala border transitioned to full operation on August 31 last year, the import of livestock has been conducted under strict legal and health protocols. Senior veterinarian Dr. Ganesh KC, who heads the Livestock Quarantine Office in Pokhara, confirmed that the influx began systematically over a three-day period starting from the anniversary of the border’s reopening. These imports are crucial for meeting the local demand for meat and traditional supplies in the region.

The arrival of these animals is a positive sign for cross-border commerce, ensuring that the necessary health screenings are conducted at the Nhechung post before the livestock moves further into the country. Officials remain vigilant to ensure that all imported animals meet the required safety standards, facilitating a smooth transition from the Tibetan highlands to the markets of Nepal.
